Advanced Manufacturing

Current State of Advanced Manufacturing

Wisconsin is now the national leader in the percentage of its workforce employed in manufacturing, as reported by the Milwaukee Sentinel in June 2009, with 15.6% of the state's jobs within this industry.

Manufacturing is a vital component of Wisconsin’s economy and accounts for approximately 500,000 jobs. This sector faces challenges including rapid technological change, an aging workforce and foreign competition. Keeping and building a robust manufacturing base is critical to the health of Wisconsin’s economy.

Now more than ever, Wisconsin’s manufacturers are competing directly with manufacturers throughout the world. In order to remain competitive in this economy, Wisconsin manufacturers must continue to become leaner, more efficient and more innovative.

Industry Insights

Although the Great Recession has had a strong impact on our region, demographics dictate that in the long-term, there will be a need for more trained workers in Wisconsin. An estimated 246,400 new jobs will be created between 2006 and 2016, and over 680,200 jobs will be available from replacement openings. Manufacturing will continue to be a key source of employment since Wisconsin has more workers in the manufacturing sector than any other state, providing some of the best-paying non-managerial jobs, especially for workers with less than 4-year college degrees.

Skills demanded for the future include:

  1. Basic Computer, PLC, Electronics, Maintenance, and Robotics;
  2. Renewable Energy Equipment and System Installment and Power generation and distribution technology-wind power and biomass;
  3. Customer service skills; and
  4. Lean Six Sigma

Sector Efforts

Advanced Manufacturing Training Programs

Regional technical colleges, such as Madison College and Moraine Park, are focusing efforts to train and prepare for advanced manufacturing careers through Career Academies and Manufacturing Skill Standard Certification training.

Career Academies

Career Academies are designed for dislocated workers who are working with their local Job Center to jump into a new career by taking college courses with convenient, short-term schedules. Madison College offers several manufacturing academies in areas of manufacturing core competencies, CNC/machine tool, and welding.

Manufacturing Skill Standards Certification (MSSC)

MSSC is a nationwide, industry-based skills, standards, assessment, and certification program for all sectors of manufacturing that is designed to equip America's workforce with the high performance knowledge and skills necessary to thrive in the modern manufacturing field.

Training modules cover essential skills in manufacturing safety, quality, production, and maintenance. For information on MSSC training and assessment offerings contact:

Green Initiatives

Green-collar jobs are not just on the horizon; they exist today, appearing in many sectors of the economy and demanding a workforce with the right set of skills to fill them. As the pace of public and private investment in clean energy quickens, the number of green-collar jobs in the economy will continue to multiply.

This job growth holds the potential to rebuild the middle class and put millions of unemployed Americans back to work. But we won’t be able to achieve these goals unless our workforce development system is strengthened to create better and greener pathways that lead workers toward new and expanding opportunities. Other countries that have spent the past few years significantly beefing up their own clean energy investments and workforce training programs may be in a much better position than we are to take advantage of global green-collar job growth.

Fortunately, we are not starting from scratch. Many of the  pieces needed for an effective training infrastructure already are operating in Wisconsin. Nevertheless, much work remains to make the existing system one that is both comprehensive and fully integrated.
