Madison College Nursing Student Receives 2024 Aspire Award
A single mother of three, Elizabeth Bresina made the courageous decision to return to school and pursue an education in Nursing at Madison College in Reedsburg while navigating a difficult divorce and transitioning incomes.
Elizabeth was connected to Greta, a WorkSmart Network Career Planner housed in the college, who supported her throughout her journey. Through the WIOA Dislocated Worker program, Elizabeth was able to receive assistance with funding for school including exam fees, work attire, and equipment as well as reimbursement for mileage associated with driving to the Truax campus in Madison.

Elizabeth also worked as a Work Study student at the College, which she expressed was very helpful in providing her with extra income and study time. Greta had high praise for Elizabeth’s character and perseverance: “I admire the fact that Liz did not let all of the barriers and challenges that most might be deterred by, but stayed the course of pursuing a longer-term plan for self-sufficiency for her family.”
Elizabeth credits WorkSmart for giving her the opportunity and support to pursue her goals. “WorkSmart allowed me to pursue my nursing degree while balancing life as a single mom. It’s never too late to go after your dreams,” she shared.
After graduating with her Associate's Degree in Nursing last December, Elizabeth is focused on finding a clinic position close to home, where she can balance her roles as a mother and a healthcare professional. The Workforce Development Board of South Central Wisconsin awarded Elizabeth with the 2024 Aspire Award for her commitment towards her goals and her willingness to support others while doing so, as evidenced by the mentorship she provided for other students undergoing the program at the college.
Elizabeth’s story inspires others to pursue their dreams, showing that with hard work and support, it is possible to overcome life’s hurdles and create a brighter future. We are proud to celebrate Elizabeth’s achievements and look forward to seeing the impact she will have in her community.
